Strategic Action

Get Your Business

Strategy is the action plan for execution. The action involves choices that will position the business where it needs to be. Its tactical in what is done to achieve goals. Strategy determines where you want to go and tactics – how you get there.

There are many things moving at the same time in business. Operations are not static, but ever changing, adapting to customer/ market expectations while focused on company goals. Finance, sales, marketing, logistics and distribution, warehousing, human resources, are integrated, overlapping functions that work together to deliver a promise. The end result is what matters – daily.

The business is in business to make money – profitably.

Some years ago went to help ‘fix’ a company and the executive on site shared they were making money daily and could not understand why there was a problem. From observations and investigation they were seeing daily cash transactions, but mismanaging resources, thus unprofitable. The problem was the person leading, not the business model or staff. In a few months with some minor changes including changing the leader, the business saw a profit – strategic action!

Entrepreneurs must keep focused on what’s in front , in line of sight, while moving in any direction. If one door closes, either find another door to open on make your own doorway – just keep moving. Strategy is only as effective as implemented. There will be challenges, uncertainty and chaos in the way, but learning to navigate through discomfort makes for a more ‘durable character.’ Choosing to be in business is a great move, and staying in business depends on your actions and choices.

You got this.

Have a fantastic day!

Contingency…Plan B

Get Your Business

In the ‘unlikely event’… fill in the blanks. It’s great to be positive when stepping into your dream world and dream business. However, what if everything does not line up; what if rain falls every day for a predictable ‘dry season month; what if all workers catch a virus simultaneously; what if the contractor does not get that ‘sure funding or deposit’ for the job you started? Do you have a contingency plan?

A contingency plan is not a ‘doom and gloom negative vibe’ on a great opportunity. Its a course of action prepared in advance for a quick response when needed. It’s the proverbial ‘plan B’, and can have multiple options based on circumstances.

Contingency planning is a part of risk management and in business is a necessary part of your sustainable business operations. Your strategic response to risks in your business can cover all areas from faulty product shipment to low employee turnout during peak periods or anything which causes major disruption to business stability. The adaptation and pivot for businesses during the ‘unlikely event’ such as ‘SARS H1N1 or Covid 19’ pandemics was at the extreme end of the risk spectrum, but for some, maybe not as impossible to happen.

As an entrepreneur the way you look at your business viability and sustainability is based on your long term goals, and therefore understanding the possible risks associated with market and industry is prudent. How do you plan to keep going or stay afloat during the challenges that will come? Avoiding the unpredictable or unexpected does not mean ‘the possibility’ will not happen, and ‘crossing that bridge when/if you meet it’ can mean closing your business or bankruptcy. Do you have a contingency plan on standby for your business risks?

Have a fantastic day!

Deep Diving…

Get Your Business

The deep dive in business is the gathering for information, to be ready and prepared for negotiations. Its the knowledge and understanding gained which helps to build confidence, based on awareness.

A key aspect of preparing entrepreneurs for building their business, is the importance of understanding their surroundings, profiling and scenario planning. Its uncertainty that makes market conditions sway in one direction or another. Predicting an outcome requires focus, creativity, and willingness to explore different possibilities.

Recently, there are many things taking place logistically for persons directly in the import and export markets. From challenges in suppliers producing products based on their challenges with accessing raw materials; to shipping delays based on ‘pandemic operations guidelines for manpower resources; to foreign currency availability for many markets, things are different. Disruption is normal, and risk-aversiveness a competitive disadvantage.

For the entrepreneur the choice of a safe investment to preserve capital can be challenging. In uncertain times such as these, taking chances is necessary for survival. Taking a chance and looking at possible outcomes from a 360 degree angle will help with decision-making. A deep dive, helps you do something differently, or support your decision to stand still. At the end of the day, you get to do a review of what you’ve done. Do something – and learn from your choices!
