Caribbean Entrepreneur-Me
Growing up I listened to my elders. Many times I was not expected to listen to their conversations, but like an expert investigator, I listened to conversations and tried to understand what was meant and how it related to my life. In ‘Trini lingo’ I maccoed, which means liked to be ‘a Wednesday’, and up in ‘big people business’.ππ
I was reprimanded a lot, for not only listening but trying to join the conversation and add my thoughts from as early as seven years old.ππ
Those days however left me with a lot of sayings which I eventually learnt the meaning to and wisdom shared, so it was not that bad gathering information on the sly! One of these saying is “the buck stops here”, and for anyone using this phrase, it simply means taking ownership of an outcome – being accountable for decisions and consequences.π²πβ
For entrepreneurs, business owners, leaders, accountability means taking ownership of both good and bad actions of those we entrust to get things done. ‘Passing the buck’ to someone else is unacceptable because that’s shifting responsibility, moving blame and consequences to another . While employees can own their mistakes, the business is responsible for the consequences. π§±π¦π§π©
Each individual is responsible for delivering on their employment promise/deliverable, just as employers are responsible for ensuring checks and controls are set for acceptable behaviors and remuneration.π€βπ΄π©π»βπ€βπ§πΎ
Being accountable for your work starts with looking in the mirror, and being real with yourself. Did I really do what I said I would do – did I add value? How do you feel about ‘passing the buck’ or saying “the buck stops here? Just something to think about.π€ππ
Have a deliverable day!βΊπ
