In 2020 the world paused for a moment with the pandemic, and we all connected with our friends, associates, businesses and others online , via our chosen media platforms. Communication was key to know what was taking place worldwide with our communities. In the midst of uncertainty, fear, loss and tragedy stories were being shared which brought hope, survival and continuity into our homes. Within the storm and chaos of the pandemic there has been kindness, appreciation, resourcefulness and resilience. People have shown up in a humane and considerate way on many occasions.
Social media is a communication tool and is a necessary part of everyday life directly or indirectly. Social media helps us tell stories, maybe a personal one, commercial one, technically detailed information, experiences or opinions; it can be done through videos or pictures, graphs or live discussions. This is the conversation starter in social media context and it is as big and connected as we want it to be. Stories shape our cultures and societies and inform our behaviors.
“Your Stories Don’t Define You – How You Tell Them Will” by Sarah Elkins (2020) is a book I’ve been reading which dives into how our stories shape who we are , what we value and remind us that the past is part of our present, even when its hidden or forgotten. This insightful conversation with the author takes place intimately as you read her stories and remember your own. It’s intrusive, helping to connect the dots with one’s life journey and boldly accepting where we want to be.
How you tell your stories matter to you because its allows perspective from others. Its that human need for validation, acceptance and approval which subtly underlines our actions. When words are shared they are calling out for eyes, ears and someone to interpret and connect with their meaning. Our social connectivity is a part of our story.
These are some thoughts to consider as you ponder these words within, and I encourage you to visit your stories and share with others your messages of hope, love, happiness and survival! Keep safe.
